How long will it take to train for an Ironman?
That really depends on what sort of athletic background a person has. For instance, if you ran the 100, 200 & 400 in college, although you are probably a pretty good athlete, you would need to develop aerobic base; that is, efficient use of fat stores (the aerobic system)
Also, the muscles adapt pretty quickly, however, connective tissue (tendons, etc) do not. They need time.
As a generic number, I'd say a person without much of an endurance training background, should allow 6-9 months minimum, depending on their background. A lot of programs out there are generic, and they are good, if you are equally good at all three sports and nothing goes wrong with your scheduled training, and if you know your aerobic and anaerobic zones....there are quite a few factors. Be sure, get a coach you trust and let them evaluate your fitness. Good luck!

That all depends on your goals and training base and background. Never rush into training for an Ironman, Look at it as putting training in the bank for a few years and increase the amount of training and base over time so you can compete without risk of injury and feel good after the race. Have you completed a half Ironman? Try that first after an Olympic. It should be a step by step process over time with a well planned training schedule. Minimum time of 12 months.
